Lions Race Past Gothic Knights

TCNJ earned a 9-0 victory

Jersey City, N.J. … The College of New Jersey women's soccer team traveled to New Jersey City University this afternoon and coasted to a 9-0 victory. The win raises the Lions season record to 4-0-1 and a perfect 2-0 in New Jersey Athletic Conference play.
 
TCNJ took the early 1-0 lead when Jessica Goldman (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) converted on a penalty kick just over ten minutes into the first half.
 
Less than five minutes later, Christine Levering (Robbinsville, NJ/Robbinsville) made the score 2-0. Elizabeth Thoresen (Colts Neck, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) passed the ball to Levering, who one-timed inside to the right post.
 
Marissa Scognamiglio (Orangeburg, NY/Pearl River) set up the third goal of the game when she headed the ball up field to Levering who shot it past the goalie on the left side. It marked the second straight game Levering netted two goals and she now has seven on the season.
 
Freshman Despina Lianidis (Linwood, NJ/Mainland Regional) netted her first collegiate goal 25 minutes into the first half with some help from Callen Vandermay (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills). Lianidis chipped the ball high from the 18 yard line and the ball hit the underside of the crossbar before going in.
 
Three minutes later, Joriam Rivera (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) made the score 5-0 with her first collegiate goal. Lianidis and Hannah Richman (Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor) were credited with the assists. Lianidis celebrating her first career goal by netting her second goal of the game with ten minutes remaining in the first half. Rivera fed the ball to Lianidis, who then scored on a breakaway in the box.
 
Less than one minute later, Richman found the back of the net with the assist going to Rivera.
 
The final TCNJ goal of the first half came on a header from Haley Bodden (Princeton, NJ/Princeton) off a corner kick. Alexa Pestritto (Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley) served the corner kick and earned the assist.
 
Alexa Beatty (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) opened the scoring in the second half to make the score 9-0 in favor of the Lions. She took a free kick from 30 yards out and lofted a perfectly placed shot into the upper left side of the net.
 
Jessica Weeder (Lebanon, NJ/North Hunterdon) got the start in net for the Lions and played the majority of the first half. Sam Carney (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) logged 24 minutes in net and made one save. Nicole DiPasquale (Paramus, NJ/Paramus) finished out the contest in goal for TCNJ.
 
The Lions outshot the Gothic Knights 35-2 in the game.
 
TCNJ is back in action on Sunday, September 25 when they host Widener University. The game is slated for a 1 p.m. start in the TCNJ Soccer Complex.
