Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Scarlet Raptors turn back Lions

Camden, NJ … The College of New Jersey women's basketball team had its three-game winning streak halted as they fell at Rutgers University-Camden, 69-40 on Wednesday night in New Jersey Athletic Conference play.

The Scarlet Raptors (10-6, 4-5 NJAC) topped the Lions (8-8, 5-5) for the second time this season, holding TCNJ to a season-low 40 points. Guard Gabby Greene led all scorers with 18 points, hitting six three-point field goals in the game. Michelle Obasi was 7-of-12 from the floor with 15 points and Caroline Santiago posted a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

The Lions struggled shooting the basketball, hitting just 16-of-62 shot attempts (24 percent) in the contest. They did get a career-high 17 points from junior Chiara Palombi (Manasquan, NJ/Manasquan). She knocked down 8-of-15 shots and also collected seven rebounds. Classmate Nikki Schott (Washington, NJ/Warren Hills) grabbed a team-high nine boards and finished with seven points.

Despite the loss, the Lions remain tied for the fifth place in the NJAC standings. Just over halfway through the conference schedule, TCNJ controls its destiny and owns a pair of wins over teams currently above them in the standings. The top six teams qualify for the NJAC championship tournament, and as the Lions demonstrated this past Saturday, they have the ability to beat any opponent they face.

Sophomore Kate O'Leary (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) dished out a game-high seven assists and added seven points. Freshman Christine Woods (River Edge, NJ/River Dell) had five rebounds.

TCNJ will visit Kean University this Saturday for a 3:00 p.m. tip-off. They will look to avenge a two-point loss at the hands of the Cougars in Packer Hall back on December 3. Kean is 10-6 overall this season and 6-3 in the NJAC. They dropped a 75-58 decision to Montclair State tonight.
