York, PA… The College of New Jersey women's basketball team bounced back after an opening defeat at the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic hosted by York College. The Lions defeated Grove City College 63-42. TCNJ evened their record to 1-1, while the Wolverines drop to 1-2.

Trailing 6-5 early, the Lions went on a 14-4 run getting a pair of threes from Samantha Famulare (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Twp.) and a triple plus an old fashioned three-point play from Charlotte Schum (East Hanover, NJ/Morris Catholic). Famulare finished with 12 points and the Lions led 21-12 at the end of the first quarter.

The Lions quickly extended the advantage in the second quarter scoring six unanswered. Schum knocked down a pair of free throws, followed by lay-ups from Shannon Devitt (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) and Jen Byrne (Medford, NJ/Shawnee). Byrne followed up record-setting performance with 11 points and eight boards.

TCNJ led 36-20 at the half.

With the Lions holding a 39-21 lead, the Wolverines made their best comeback attempt. A lay-up by Kate Balcom preceded back-to-back threes from Lexie Arkwright. Arkwright paced Grove City with 12 points.

The Lions scored the next ten points, getting four each from Schum and Byrne and two from Devitt. Devitt stuffed the stat sheet with eight points, five rebounds, six blocks, and two steals.

TCNJ held a 52-33 lead after three quarters.

The Lions would grow the lead to 23 in the fourth quarter before cruising to the 21 point victory.

Schum was the Lions leading scorer with 16 points. Nikki Schott (Washington, NJ/Warren Hills) posted seven points and six boards.

TCNJ remains on the road for an early conference match-up with Rutgers-Camden Tuesday night at 6:00 PM.
