Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

TCNJ Tops Lynchburg, Advances to Elite Eight

Ewing, NJ--The College of New Jersey women's soccer team (21-0) defeated Lynchburg College (20-4) 5-0 Saturday in the Sectional Round of the NCAA Division III Championships.

The Lions got on the board early in the third minute. Jessica Goldman (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) continued to create plays, as she sent a through ball from midfield that was ran down at the 18 yard line by Christine Levering (Robbinsville, NJ/Robbinsville). Levering controlled the through ball and snuck it inside of the right post to make it 1-0 Lions. With that assist, Goldman is now tied for third place in in TCNJ program history with 30 on her excellent career. The Lions struck again about four minutes later. Kayla Bertolino (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) sent in a cross that got punched away by the Lynchburg keeper, however Kelly Carolan (Sparta, NJ/Sparta) gathered the loose ball and punched in a low shot to extend the lead.

In the second half, neither team was able to break the scoring colum the first thirty minutes of the half, but the Lions blew the game open with three goals in four minutes. The first came from Jen McGrogan (Pompton Plains, NJ/Peaquannock Twp.) McGrogan shot a free kick from about 30 yards out that sailed just underneath the crossbar for her first goal of the season. Three minutes later Hannah Richman (Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor) took a pass from Elizabeth Thoresen (Colts Neck, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) then beat the defender to get a clean look from seven yards out, and Richman punched it in to make it 4-0 Lions. The final goal came from Thoresen got in on the scoring action, as her left-footed shot from 15 yards out was the exclamation mark on the victory.

In net for the Lions, Nicole DiPasquale (Paramus, NJ/Paramus) earned her 19th shutout victory of the season. Dipasquale made two saves, and intercepted several Lynchburg crosses that had potential for a goal.

The Lions out-shot Lynchburg 13-9, and the corner kicks were even with each team taking three.

Next up the Lions will battle Messiah College for a trip to the Final Four on Sunday, November 19th at 1:00pm at The College of New Jersey Soccer Complex.
