Doylestown, PA... The College of New Jersey women's basketball team (6-3) picked up a non conference victory against Delaware Valley University (2-7) on Saturday.
Kate O'Leary (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) scored a career high 28 points and hit nine three pointers.
In the first quarter, both teams exchanged baskets, and neither was able to push a lead higher then three points. O'Leary got the Lions offense going in the second quarter as she hit a three pointer in the Lions first possession. TCNJ was able to build a 24-18 lead, however Delaware Valley came back with a 7-0 run to take a 25-24 lead with three minutes remaining. O'Leary hit another three pointer to pull the Lions ahead again, and the back and forth battle continued, and the Lions went into the locker room holding a 32-29 lead.
The Lions began to pull away in the third quarter as they went on a 9-0 run, with all of the points coming from O'Leary three pointers to build a 44-31 lead. She remained locked in from downtown, and hit six three pointers in the third quarter. A jumper from
Jen Byrne (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) gave the Lions a 56-41 lead, and they controlled the fourth quarter to hold onto the victory.
O'Leary went 9-17 from beyond the arc, and topped her previous career high of 19 points. She also grabbed six rebounds, and spread the ball around as she tallied five assists. Byrne added 14 points and four rebounds.
Shannon Devitt (Westfield,NJ/Westfield) continued to play well off of the bench as she scored eight points and a team high ten rebounds, and
Samantha Famulare (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Twp.) scored eight points and added six rebounds.
Nikki Schott (Washington, NJ/Warren Hills) played solid low post defense and blocked four shots to go along with eight rebounds.
The Lions dominated the glass as they out rebounded Delaware Valley 51-34, and converted it into 18 second chance points. On the defensive end the Lions forced 16 turnovers in which they turned into 18 points.
With the win the Lions improve to 6-3, and have one game remaining before winter break as they will play Transylvania University on Tuesday, December 19th at 6:00 pm in Packer Hall.
