Lions drop pair to Randolph-Macon

Ashland, VA… The College of New Jersey softball team dropped a double header to Randolph-Macon College Sunday afternoon. The Lions lost game one 4-3 and the second game 8-0 in five innings.

In game one, Jess McGuire (Stockton, NJ / Hunterdon Central Regional) got the Lions off to a quick start, bombing a three-run homer in the top of the first inning. McGuire hit her only other collegiate home run, also a three-run shot, in TCNJ's season opener a year ago. McGuire finished the first half of the double header 3-for-3 and closed out the day 4-for-5.

The Yellow Jackets responded scoring two of their own in the first courtesy of a two run shot off the bat of Harley Jones. Randolph-Macon scored another pair in the third, using a sacrifice bunt from Jones to tie the score and an RBI double from Skylar Toth to take the lead.

The Lions had several chances to even the score with a batter reaching safely in every inning, including advancing a runner to third base in both the sixth and seventh innings. Candace Whittemore pitched the complete game for the Yellow Jackets to pick up her second victory of the season. Whittemore struck out seven, including a key punch out with runners on second and third with just one out in the top of the final frame.

In the back half of the double header, the Lions struggled offensively managing just four hits off Cameron Thompson, who pitched the shutout for her second victory on the young season.

The Lions pitching struggled to find the zone during a sixth-run fourth inning. Randolph-Macon drew six walks, collected two singles, and took advantage of a hit batter.

Megan Mayernik (Columbus, NJ / Northern Burlington) had a solid debut for TCNJ collecting three hits, including a double. Daniella Marino (Hazelet, NJ / Raritan) also collected three hits and Danielle Carey (Maple Shade, NJ / Maple Shade) recorded two singles.

The Lions are now off until the Rebel Spring games from Kissimmee, FL on March 11-16.
