Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Roadrunners exit with 47-42 NJAC win

Ewing, NJ … The College of New Jersey women's basketball team suffered a 47-42 setback to Ramapo College on Saturday afternoon in Packer Hall.

The Lions fell for the first time in over a week and dropped to a 10-11 overall and 7-8 in New Jersey Athletic Conference play. The Roadrunners improved to 8-14 overall and 3-12 in the NJAC. TCNJ slips into seventh place overall in the league standings, but can make up ground on William Paterson University this Wednesday night in Wayne, NJ.

Ramapo held the Lions to one of their lowest scoring totals of the season. TCNJ shot just 25 percent from the field and turned the ball over 17 times. The contest was never a certainty until the final minute, however, as neither squad led by double digits throughout the 40 minutes of play.

In the opening half, both teams struggled with their shooting touch in the opening period. The Lions connected on just 7-of-27 shots and the Roadrunners were 9-of-23. Junior Charlotte Schum (East Hanover, NJ/Morris Catholic) paced the TCNJ offense with eight points. Her three-pointer with 28 seconds left in the half put the Lions up 23-21. But Jessica Repasy answered with a baseline jumper with two ticks remaining to even the score at the break.

Ramapo took command in the midway through the third quarter, scoring the first seven points of the second half. The Lions retaliated with an 11-0 run.  Nicole Shatsky (Marlboro, NJ/Marlboro) ignited the run with a three-point field goal. Kate O'Leary (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) followed with long ball to shave the deficit to a point. Freshman Christine Woods (River Edge, NJ/River Dell) then converted a conventional three-point play and hit a short jumper on the next possession to TCNJ up four.

With the game tied 38-38 with just over three minutes to play, Jina Crawford and Tia Solomon hit back-to-back lay-ups to Ramapo up four. Lions' junior Nikki Schott (Washington Twp., NJ/Warren) dribbled the baseline and dropped in a reverse lay-up before Woods drained a pair of foul shots to knot the game at 42.

Solomon delivered the game-winner as she got the roll off of a drive and then foul. She hit her free throw and the Roadrunners led 45-42. The Lions could not convert on the offensive end and two more free throws by Shelby Ringer sealed the outcome.

Junior Chiara Palombi (Manasquan, NJ/Manasquan) led TCNJ with 10 points and eight rebounds. Schum finished with eight points and six boards, while Schott added six points and eight rebounds.

Prior to the game, two TCNJ seniors were recognized before playing their final regular season home game in Packer Hall. Kim Dana of Freehold Twp. and Katy Amato of Wyckoff, NJ were honored along with their families.

The Lions return to the hardwood on Wednesday night when they take on the Pioneers at 6 p.m.
