TCNJ runs past Gordon College, 8-5

Lake Myrtle, Fla. … The College of New Jersey baseball team rolled to an 8-5 victory over Gordon College on Monday early evening in Lake Myrtle, Fla.

Sophomore Michael Fisher (Robbinsville, NJ/Robbinsville) earned his second win of the season, limiting the Fighting Scots to two runs on three hits over six innings. Classmate Dylan Crowley (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) pitched the final three innings to earn the three-inning save as the Lions improved to 3-1 overall.

Freshman Thomas Persichetti (Hamilton, NJ/Notre Dame) sparked the offense, going 3-for-4 with a double, triple and three runs scored. Senior CJ C.J. Gearhart (Robbinsville, NJ/Robbinsville) continued to swing a hot bat, racking up two more hits in the game.

The Lions jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first. Persichetti singled to right-center used his legs to produce the first run of the game. He advanced to second on a wild pitch, raced to third on a second wild pitch, and continued home on an errant throw from the catcher.

TCNJ added to its lead, plating two runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. Junior Austin Lindsay (New Egypt, NJ/New Egypt) delivered a run-scoring single in the fifth and Persichetti doubled in a run in the sixth to highlight an active Lions' offense.

Fisher was touched for a pair of run in the sixth, but averted any further damage by inducing a ground ball out to shortstop Zachary Shindler (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) to end the inning.

Gordon was guilty of three errors on the defensive side and uncorked seven wild pitches in the contest. That coupled with five TCNJ stolen bases – two by Shindler and Patrick Anderson – generated the run support needed for Fisher and Crowley.

The Lions will enjoy a day off tomorrow (Tuesday) and will be back on the diamond on Wednesday when they square off against Dickinson College at 9:30 a.m. and the University of Wisconsin-Platteville at 1:00 p.m.
