Chester, PA… The College of New Jersey baseball team (10-4) struggled defensively committing nine errors and walking 15 batters as the Lions fell to Widener University 19-4 Wednesday afternoon.
The Pride got on the board in the first using a pair of sacrifices to score Bob Barnett, who reached on a leadoff single. The Lions responded in the top half of second using doubles from
CJ Gearhart (Robbinsville, NJ / Robbinsville) and
Mike Follet (Marlton, NJ / Cherokee).  Follet would score later in the inning on a wild pitch.
Widener broke open the game in the bottom of the third inning, taking advantage of seven walks, five hits, and two errors to score 11 runs in the bottom of third inning. TCNJ showed fight responding with two runs of their own in the top half of the fourth. Senior
Ben Varone (Marlton, NJ / Cherokee) knocked in both runs with a bases loaded single down the third base line.
The bright spot on the Mound for TCNJ was freshman Mike Walley (Yardley, PA / Notred Dame). Walley struck out two and did not allow a run over 2 1/3 innings.
Widener out-hit TCNJ 10-5.
The Lions return to action Thursday afternoon, when they travel to Haverford College. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 PM.
