Bats Lead TCNJ Past Farmingdale

Ewing, NJ … The College of New Jersey baseball team swatted 18 hits, including seven for extra bases as they defeated Farmingdale State College, 15-2 on Tuesday afternoon in George Ackerman Park.

Sophomore Matt Giacose (Wyckoff, NJ/Ramapo) belted three doubles and drove in two, while shortstop Zachary Shindler (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) laced a single, double, and triple and knocked in three. Freshman Max Guidice (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) pitched seven solid innings to garner his first collegiate win on the mound.

The Lions moved to 16-6 on the season, while the Rams fell to 14-12 overall.

A seven-run first inning was too much damage to overcome for Farmingdale. TCNJ ripped five hits and forced two pitching changes before final out of the first was recorded. A single run in the second and two in the third made it a 10-0 game. Guidice was touched for a pair of runs in the seventh, but scattered four hits and struck out four in seven complete innings. The Lions tacked on four more in the seventh and one in the eighth as rookie Nickolas Kleftogiannis (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) came on to pitch the final two innings of scoreless relief. He allowed two hits and struck out a pair.

TCNJ received offensive production from up and down its line-up. Giacose notched his first career hit with a two-run double to right-center in the first. He stroked two more two-baggers later in the game.

Freshmen Lloyd Padmore (Cartaret, NJ/Cartaret), David Cardona III (Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth), and Donovan Stallworth (Wharton, NJ/Jefferson Twp.) also collected their first collegiate hits in a Lions' uniform.

Shindler drilled his third triple in five games and now has four on the season and 10 in his career. That moves him past former teammate Garen Turner '16 and into the top 10 all time in program history, tied with another former teammate, Patrick Roberts '16.

Junior Austin Lindsay (New Egypt, NJ/New Egpyt), sophomore Ryan Fischer (Robbinsville, NJ/Robbinsville) and freshman Thomas Persichetti (Hamilton, NJ/Notre Dame) also knocked out two hits each in the game.

TCNJ will take a day off from competition and enter back into New Jersey Athletic Conference action on Thursday at Stockton University. The Lions will host the Ospreys on Friday and take part in the Lace Up for Pediatric Cancer initiative. Players and coaching staff will wear gold laces to show their support and $4 of each pair that cost $5 will go to fighting pediatric cancer.
