Galloway, NJ … The College of New Jersey baseball team competed its series sweep of Stockton University with a 5-0 victory in George Ackerman Park.
Â
The Lions improved to 18-6 overall and are now 7-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference standings. The Ospreys fell to 11-13 and 3-5 in the NJAC.
Â
Freshman
Michael Walley (Yardley, Pa/Notre Dame) was terrific in his first collegiate start. He tossed seven scoreless innings, struck out five and allowed just three hits. The lanky right-hander faced the minimum 12 batters during innings two through four. He allowed just two baserunners, one of which was thrown out stealing by catcher
CJ Gearhart (Robbinsville NJ/Robbinsville) and the second was forced out in a 4-6-3 double play.
Â
Junior
Matt Curry (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) pitched the final two innings of relief to complete the shutout. He gave up one hit and struck out two for his fifth save. The Lions pitching staff has now surrendered just eight runs in its last six games, five of which were conference match-ups.
Â
TCNJ got on the board in the second. Gearhart singled and advanced to second on a base hit to right-center by
Austin Lindsay (New Egypt, NJ/New Egypt). When he noticed the right fielder bobbled the ball, he continued to third and beat the throw. That was key as
Jacob Simon (Hightstown, NJ/Hightstown) hit a routine ground ball to short that allowed Gearhart to scored uncontested.
Â
Walley made the run stand without trouble until the seventh. The Osprey used a base hit and a hit batsmen to eventually put runners on second and third. But a short fly ball to right ended the inning, as Walley escaped the jam.
Â
Gearhart opened the seventh with a base hit to left. With two outs, Simon drew a walk to put runners at first and second.
Tommy McCarthy (Allentown, NJ/Allentown) found real estate in right-center for a two-run double to push the lead to 3-0.
Two more runs in the eighth gave Curry more cushion.
Zachary Shindler (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh), who walked earlier in the inning, sprinted home on a wild pitch. Lindsay then doubled inside the third-base bag to score Gearhart, who had singled.
Â
Curry slammed the door in the ninth with a 1-2-3 inning, striking out the final batter looking.
Â
TCNJ continues conference play tomorrow, visiting Montclair State University for a double header starting at 11:30 a.m.
