Lions Tripped Up By Griffins, 10-5

Gwynedd, Pa … The College of New Jersey dropped a 10-5 decision to Gwynedd-Mercy University on Monday afternoon in Gwynedd, Pa.

The Lions (23-9) had a tough time capitalizing offensively, leaving 13 runners on base. The Griffins amassed 12 hits in the game and took advantage of seven three passes to extend their winning streak to eight games and improve to 19-10 on the season.

Starting for the second time in three games, junior Patrick Anderson (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) went 3-for-5 with a solo home run, his first of the season and third of his career. Anderson, who is recovering from injury, is now six for his last eight. Sophomore Ryan (Robbinsville, NJ/Robbinsville) added a pair of hits and Matt Giacose (Wyckoff, NJ/Ramapo) was 1-for-1 with two walks.

It appeared as if TCNJ was headed for a big day when they strung together three singles in the first inning. Austin Lindsay (New Egypt, NJ/New Egypt) drove in Thomas Persichetti (Hamilton, NJ/Notre Dame) with a fielder's choice to take a 1-0 lead.

A two-run single by Josh Lopez in the third gave the Griffins a 2-1 advantage. A wild pitch led to two more runs in the fourth to bolster the GMU lead to 4-1.

In the fifth, the Lions cut it two when Zachary Shindler (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) lined a base hit to right field to score Fischer. It marked the 23rd consecutive game that Shindler has reached base safely.

Griffin Tommy Nardini found the right-center field gap for a two-run double in the bottom of the inning. The Lions fought back with two of their own in the seventh. Giacose was credited with a sacrifice fly off an outfield error and Tommy McCarthy (Allentown, NJ/Allentown) drew a bases loaded walk to close the gap to 6-4.

Gwynedd countered with a four-spot to put the game out of reach. Anderson homered to left, but that would all as Dave Tatoian recorded the final five outs for the win.

TCNJ will remain on the Pennsylvania side of the Delaware River tomorrow, visiting Aracdia University for a non-conference contest slated for a 3:30 start. The Knights are currently 26-9.
