Camden, NJ ... The College of New Jersey scored six runs in the final three innings to steal a game from Rutgers University-Camden on Friday afternoon in Camden, NJ.
The Lions improved to 13-5 overall and 3-0 in New Jersey Athletic Conference play, while the Scarlet Raptors fell to 10-9 and 1-2 in the conference.
After being held scoreless for the opening six frames and trailing 4-0, TCNJ came to life with three runs in the seventh, two in the eight, and one in the ninth for the come-from-behind win. Junior
Brandon Zachary (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) pitched six strong innings before handing the ball over to the bullpen. Juniors
Dylan Crowley (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) and
Matt Curry (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) combined to shut down the RUC offense over the final three frames to give the Lions' offense enough time to turn the tables. Crowley earned his second career win and Curry notched his second save of the season.
The Scarlet Raptors produced all of their runs in the fifth. Trailing 4-0 entering the top of the seventh, TCNJ strung together five hits to close the gap to 4-3.
Zachary Shindler (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) and
CJ Gearhart (Robbinsville, NJ/Robbinsville) ignited the rally with base hits. Junior
Mike Follet (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) delivered a one-out single to score Shindler. A fielder's choice by
Jacob Simon (Hightstown, NJ/Hightstown) plated Gearhart to make it a 4-2 game. Sophomore
Tommy McCarthy (Allentown, NJ/Allentown) kept the rally going with a single to left, and after a throwing error, Simon came home to score.
In the eighth, sophomore
Ryan Fischer (Robbinsville, NJ/Robbinsville) singled to center and came home on a triple off the bat of Shindler. Junior
Austin Lindsay (New Egypt, NJ/New Egypt) lined a sacrifice fly to right, and suddenly, the Lions held a 5-4 advantage.
McCarthy stroked a single to left-center with one out in the ninth. Freshman
Thomas Persichetti (Hamilton, NJ/Notre Dame) then came through with an RBI-double to right field to chase McCarthy and give Curry a two-run cushion. The tall right-hander put it in the books with a 1-2-3 ninth to close it out. Curry has now pitched 17-plus innings without allowing an earned run.
Zachary struck out seven and gave up just two earned runs. Shindler, Gearhart, and McCarthy all finished with two hits.
The Lions return to NJAC competition tomorrow when they visit Ramapo College for a double header. The Roadrunners are 8-10 this season and 2-1 in league play. First pitch is slated for 11:30 a.m.
