EWING, N.J. – The 8
th ranked College of New Jersey women's soccer team picked up a crucial victory over Rowan University on Wednesday night by a final score of 2-1. TCNJ improved to 11-1-1 overall including 7-0-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference, while the Profs dropped to 12-2-2 and 6-1-2 in conference play. The victory also gives the Lions the regular season NJAC Championship, and locks up home field advantage as well as the number one seed in the conference tournament.
The Lions had an opportunity to score right away.
Taylor Nolan took a shot three minutes and 49 seconds in that was saved by the Prof keeper. Rowan would get on the board first, as a goal from Cathryn McCarry off of a corner kick made it a 1-0 game in the 19
th minute.
In the 68
th minute, the Lions broke through.
Faith Eichenour passed it pack to
Jen McGrogan, and McGrogan sent a long pass from 45 yards out that wound up finding
Joriam Rivera in close. Rivera tapped it in from the left post to tie the game up at 1-1. The goal was the first on the season for Rivera.
After that goal, the momentum swung in the Lions' favor. In the 87
th minute, they found the game-winner. Nolan touched it to
Arielle Curtis on the right side, and Curtis sent a high pass to
Nikki Butler on the left side. Butler sent an arcing header that looped over the Rowan keeper to put TCNJ out in front 2-1. The Lions were able to stifle the Profs attack the remainder of the game to hold onto the win.
On the game the Lions held a 14-3 advantage in shots, as well as an 8-3 lead in corner kicks.
Prior to the game, the Lions held senior night to honor their one senior,
Arielle Curtis.
Next up will be the New Jersey Athletic Conference semifinals on Wednesday, Oct. 31 in Lions stadium.
