EWING, N.J. – Despite four victories and seven total bonus points, 17
th-ranked The College of New Jersey wrestling team dropped its opening dual of the 2018-19 season 20-19 in Packer Hall Friday night. The eighth-ranked Spartans improved to 2-0 on the year.
Christian Deehan earned an early takedown to take a 2-0 bout lead for the Lions against seventh-ranked Jared Kuhns, but the talented Spartan fought back to earn a major decision at 125.
Jake Giordano then rode out his opponent in the final seconds at 133 to maintain a 9-1 major decision, tying the score at four.
At 141,
Robert Dinger came through for the Lions. After reversing a takedown midway through the third period. Dinger took advantage of the unsettled situation and earned the pin and six team points.
After a trio of Spartan victories returned the advantage to York, before fifth-ranked
Dan Kilroy earned a 6-3 decision over Joseph Sindoni, a 2017 national qualifier.
Daniel Surich fought hard to keep the momentum at 184, entering the third period tied at two against fifth-ranked Frankie Krauss. But Krauss had choice and selected bottom, earning the escape and narrow 3-2 decision win.
After a York victory at 197 secured the team victory, Tom Marretta won via injury to produce the final score.
The Lions are now off through the Thanksgiving holiday and will return to the mats November 30 at the New Standard Invitational hosted by York.
