NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – The College of New Jersey women's basketball team was topped by Smith College on Sunday afternoon by a final score of 72-67. The Lions slipped to 7-5 on the 2018-19 season, while the Pioneers bumped their record up to 8-3.
TCNJ began the game on a 15-4 run.
Sam Famulare grabbed a pair of offensive rebounds to keep the possession alive, then knocked down a jump shot.
Elle Cimilluca drained a three-pointer on the next trip down the court, then
Kate O'Leary hit from deep to make it an early 11 point lead.
In the second quarter, the Lions extended their lead to 17 by way of a 17-3 run. Famulare converted after grabbing another offensive rebound, then Cimilluca hit a jumper to make it 34-17 TCNJ.
With 7:26 to play in the fourth, Famulare hit a jumper to make it a 60-54 game. Cimilluca then set up O'Leary, who hit from three point range to make it 63-54. The Pioneers knocked down a three-pointer with just under four minutes to play to take a 66-63 lead.
Jen Byrne was fouled and hit a couple of free throws to make it a one point ballgame, however the Pioneers hit the free throws on their end to hang onto the win.
Shannon Devitt scored 15 points and added a team-high 14 rebounds. Famulare scored 14 points, while
Cailey Gibson added nine off of the bench. Byrne, O'Leary, and Cimilluca each finished the day with eight points.
O'Leary moved into a tie for fifth place in made three-pointers in TCNJ history, as the two trifectas put her at 139 on her career.
Next up for TCNJ will be a home game against Ramapo College on Jan. 5 at 3:00 p.m.
