Win Streak Reaches Five as Women's Basketball Defeats Montclair State

EWING, N.J. – The College of New Jersey women's basketball team picked up its fifth win in a row with a 58-42 victory over Montclair State University on Saturday afternoon. The Lions pushed their record to 6-3 on the year including an unblemished 5-0 in conference action, while the Red Hawks dropped to 7-2 and 4-1 in NJAC play.

The Lions came out of the gate strong, and built a 25-12 lead at the end of the first half with a 14-4 run to conclude the second quarter. With 1:37 to play in the half, Shannon Devitt hit a lay-up from in close. Lauren Barlow then found an open Cailey Gibson after an aggressive drive, and Gibson sank the trifecta to make it a 25-12 game with a minute to go. TCNJ's defense held the Red Hawks to just six field goals in the first half, and forced 10 turnovers.

In the second half, the Lions did not take their foot off of the gas pedal and continued to build the lead. Elle Cimilluca found Sam Famulare on a backdoor cut, and Famulare hit the lay-up to make it 36-20. On TCNJ's next possession, Gibson hit a trifecta, then on TCNJ's next possession Cimilluca hit a three-pointer of her own off of a Devitt assist to make it 42-22. The Lions were able to coast to the victory in the fourth quarter.

Jen Byrne led TCNJ with a game-high 15 points on 6-for-12 from the field, and added seven rebounds. Famulare also shot an even 50 percent as she went 5-for-10 from the floor for 12 points. Devitt posted her seventh double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Gibson contributed eight points and eight rebounds coming off of the bench. Coming into today's game, Devitt was ranked fourth in NCAA Division III in double-doubles.

The Lions played stingy defense on the afternoon, as they held a talented Red Hawk team to 34 percent shooting from the floor and forced 16 turnovers.

Next up for TCNJ is one more game before the holiday break, as they Lions will welcome New Jersey City University to Packer Hall on Dec. 12, at 6:00 p.m.
