Lions Split Final Pair at Salisbury Invitational

Salisbury, MD… The College of New Jersey softball team split their pair of games on day two of the Salisbury Invitational. The Lions defeated Keystone College 7-3, before falling in the nightcap 7-1 to Salisbury University. The Lions and Seagulls each finished the weekend 3-1, while the Giants finished 0-4.
 
Paige Mokychic got the Giants on the board in the bottom of the first with a home run to left center. The Lions responded in the top of the fourth when Allie Immerso (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) punched a two-out RBI single through the right side of the infield.
 
The Lions exploded in the top of the fifth. Megan Mayernik (Columbus, NJ/Northern Burlington) started the inning with a lead-off single. After getting sacrificed into scoring position, Gaby Bennett (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) ripped an RBI double. Annalise Suitovsky (Warren Twp.,NJ/Watchung Hills) brought Bennett home with an RBI single. Madison Levine (Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) and Danielle Carey (Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) hit back-to-back doubles and Jenna Schwartz (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville) hit a two-out single to end the five run frame.

Mayernik went four-for-four in the opening game.
 
Kristen Barrera (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) earned her first win of the season before Sam Platt (Cedar Grove, NJ/Mount Saint Dominic Academy) pitched the final 2 1/3 innings for the save.
 
In the nightcap, The Lions were victimized by a six run fourth inning, capped by a grand slam from Amelia Trotter. The Lions got a run back in the bottom of the fifth on an Immerso infield single, but would get no closer.
 
In the game, Alanna Namit (Mountainside, NJ/Governor Livingston) recorded six strikeouts in four innings of work.
 
The Lions will return to play at the 2018 Sunkissed Games in Osceola, FL.
