Ewing, NJ… The College of New Jersey softball team earned their third sweep in four chances against New Jersey Athletic Conference competition defeating Ramapo College 10-2 in six innings in game one and 2-0 in game two. The Lions are now 19-5 on the year and 7-1 in conference play. The Roadrunners dropped to 13-9 and 2-4 in the NJAC.
Â
The Lions broke through in the fourth inning of game one.
Jess McGuire (Stockton, NJ/Hunterdon Central Regional) doubled home a run before the Lions load the bases.
Annalise Suitovsky (Warren Twp., NJ/Watchung Hills) delivered a two-run single to extend the lead to 3-0.
Â
In the fifth, the Lions scored on a failed pick-off and a beautifully executed squeeze bunt by
Helena Coppola (Lincroft, NJ/St. John Vianney).
Â
The Rodarunners got a pair back in the top of the sixth, but Lions pitcher
Alanna Namit (Mountainside, NJ/Governor Livingston) induced an infield pop-up, a fielder's choice, and a strikeout to escape the jam. Namit would improve to 9-0 on the season with the win.
Â
The Lions would tack on a pair of runs in the top of the sixth with no one out and a pair of runners still on base.
Lauren Conroy (Aberdeen, NJ/Matawan Regional) hit a triple and scored on an error to give the Lions the walk-off win.
Â
Game two was a pitcher's duel from the beginning between the Roadrunners Erin Fitzsimmons and the Lions
Sam Platt (Cedar Grove, NJ/Mount Saint Dominic Academy).
Â
Conroy delivered an RBI-single in the first, her third RBI of the day. Following that run neither team advanced a runner past second base until the bottom of the sixth. The Lions loaded the bases and Coppola was hit by a pitch to produce the final score.
Â
Platt tossed her second one-hitter of the season for the win, striking out three. Between games, Platt was awarded the Dr. Harold W. Eickoff Outstanding Senior Female Athlete Award as the senior athlete at TCNJ with the highest cumulative GPA.
Â
The Lions will have a quick turn around when they face William Paterson University tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 PM in a make-up double header from last week.
