19th-Ranked Lions Fall Short in NJAC Final

Montclair, NJ…The College of New Jersey softball team fell in a pair of games to Rowan University 3-2 in eight innings and 4-0 as the Profs earned the 2018 New Jersey Athletic Conference softball championship. The 19th-ranked Lions are 31-8 on the year, while 23rd-ranked Rowan sits at 33-10-1

In game one, the Lions broke through in the fifth. Allie Immerso singled and moved to second on an errant throw. Following a sacrifice that moved her to third, Megan Mayernik (Burlington, NJ/Northern Burlington) executed a perfect squeeze and beat the throw to first for an RBI-single.

TCNJ tacked on another run in the sixth when Danielle Carey (Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) scored Gaby Bennett (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) on a ground out.

In the seventh, Rowan tied the game on a two-run homer by Carly Anderson. The Profs would get the walk off win in the eighth when a shallow fly to left field by Morgan Smith dropped between the charging Immerso and Mayernik.

Sam Platt (Cedar Grove, NJ/Mount Saint Dominic Academy) went 4.2 scoreless innings, earning a no decision.

Lauren Conroy (Aberdeen, NJ/Matawan Regional) extended her hitting streak to 16 games in the opener.

TCNJ fell behind early in game two as the Profs scored a pair of runs in the fourth on an RBI-single by starting pitcher Jesse DeDomenico and a sacrifice fly. Rowan would add a pair of unearned runs in the sixth.

The Lions registered just a pair of hits off the bats of Mayernik and Helena Coppola (Lincroft, NJ/St. John Vianney) in the second game.

TCNJ awaits their fate as the NCAA Tournament selection show will take place Monday at 1:00 PM on NCAA.com.
