Men's Soccer Defeats FDU-Florham

EWING, N.J. – The College of New Jersey men's soccer team won their sixth straight game as they defeated Fairleigh Dickinson University on Wednesday night by a final score of 2-0. TCNJ improved to 6-0 while FDU Florham fell to 1-4.

The Lions had a golden opportunity just about four minutes in, but the header from Joerg Jauk banged off of the post. In the 18th minute the Devils had a prime scoring opportunity with a breakaway, yet keeper Nolan Cloney slammed the door and came up with the save to keep things scoreless.

In the 44th minute, Nick Sample punched one in the back of the net to get the Lions on top. Ryan Vazquez touched it out back to Sample, and he sent a laser shot from 20 yards out on the right side inside the left post to make it 1-0 TCNJ. After the Lions took that lead into the locker room, they came out in the second half where they left off in the first. Just three minutes in, Michael Maltese sent a beautiful arcing cross from the left corner that found Ryan Santos. Santos collected it, then punched it inside the left post from 10 yards out to make it 2-0 Lions. They were able to control the remainder of the game to hold onto the victory.

In net Cloney made four saves to earn the shutout and his second win of the season. The Lions held a 17-7 advantage in shots, and a 9-2 edge in corner kicks.

The Lions will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 15 for the New Jersey Athletic Conference opener against Rutgers Newark at 1 p.m.
