EWING, N.J. – The College of New Jersey men's soccer team defeated College of Mount Saint Vincent in the 2018 home opener on Wednesday by a final score of 8-0. TCNJ improves to 3-0 while CMSV falls to 0-2.
The Lions had a chance instantly, as
Ryan Vazquez sent in a shot just 10 seconds in but was blocked by the Dolphin keeper. In the 11
th minute the Lions cracked the scoring column, as Vazquez punched in a header after taking a cross from the right side from
Timmy Suchora. Vazquez converted on another nine minutes later, off a right to left cross from
James Pike. Just a couple minutes later, Vazquez punched in a header off a corner from
Nick Sample to secure the first half hat trick.
In the 30
th minute,
Abdullah Afridi sent in a lefty shot from about 25 yards out that found the back of the net and extended the Lions lead to 4-0. Sample added another before the half ended with an assist from Suchora. In the second half the Lions continued to control the pace of the game and added two goals from Afridi, one more from Sample, and one each from
Ryan Santos and
Ethan Mueller. In his collegiate debut,
Nolan Cloney got the win in net.
The Lions outshot the Dolphins by a 54-1 margin, and held a 9-2 edge in corner kicks.
The Lions will return to action for the TCNJ Men's Soccer Classic this weekend. First up is Gettysburg College on Sept. 8 at 1:00 p.m.
