EWING, N.J. – The TCNJ women's hoops team defeated Stockton University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference match-up by a final score of 69-59 on Wednesday night in overtime.
The Lions (9-7, 8-2 NJAC) were trailing 30-21 with over two minutes left in the second quarter, yet closed out the half with a 7-0 stretch to pull within 30-28.
Jen Byrne knocked down a pair of free throws, then
Sam Famulare scored on a strong take to the bucket to make it a five point game.
Elle Cimilluca converted on a floater with 12 seconds left, then
Cailey Gibson came up with a steal and was fouled on the other end with just .2 seconds left in the half. Gibson would hit both free throws to make it a five point game heading into intermission.
Nicole Shatsky came up with a steal on the defensive end, and found Byrne on the fast break to make it 46-43 with eight minutes to play in the game. On the next offensive possession the same combo worked again, as Shatsky kicked it to an open Byrne in the corner who sank the three ball to tie it up at 46. Gibson generated a steal then took it all the way to put TCNJ out in front.
With under a minute to play, Famulare took it to the cup and dished it to an open
Shannon Devitt in the paint, and Devitt scored on the lay-up to put TCNJ in front 55-53. The Ospreys would hit two free throws on the other end to tie it back up. The Lions had an opportunity to win it at the end, yet it did not fall and the game went into overtime.
In the extra period, Byrne hit a jumper to get TCNJ back out in front, then Shatsky took one to the basket and scored to make it a four point edge. After Gibson hit a pair of free throws, she found an open Devitt in the key and Devitt hit to make it a 63-56 lead. The Lions were able to hit their free throws and hold onto the victory.
Byrne scored 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Devitt contributed 15 points and 11 rebounds for her 13
th double-double of the season, while Famulare tallied 11 points. Gibson scored 10 points, and Shatsky scored six points to go with four assists.
The Lions will return to the hardwood Saturday, for a trip to Rutgers-Newark at 6:00 p.m.
