EWING, N.J. –  The TCNJ women's basketball team was defeated in a tight game Rowan University on Wednesday night by a final score of 47-46.
TCNJ (10-8, 8-3 NJAC) was trailing 21-16 with over two minutes to play in the first half, yet they used a 7-2 stretch at the end of the half to make it a 23-23 ballgame heading into the locker room.
Nicole Shatsky set up
Cailey Gibson who hit from three point range, then a couple of possessions later Shatsky assisted
Rachel Gazzola on a lay in. Shatsky knocked down a pair of free throws with two seconds left to tie it up before the intermission.
The Lions were trailing by one point with 7:45 to play, when Shatsky scored on a lay-up. On the next Prof possession, Gazzola poked the ball away and came up with a steal, then
Jen Byrne set her up for the lay in on the other end.
With 2:35 to play, Gibson found
Shannon Devitt in the paint, and Devitt converted to put TCNJ in front 45-43. The Profs hit a pair of free throws to tie it up, then a Byrne free throw put the Lions out in front 46-45 with 44 seconds to go. Rowan made a pair of free throws with 20 seconds to go, and the Lions chance at a buzzer beater did not go down.
Byrne scored 10 points and added six rebounds, while Devitt tallied nine points and added five boards.
Kate O'Leary scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds.
The Lions will return to the hardwood on Jan. 26 for another important NJAC matchup, this time at Montclair State for a 3:00 p.m. tip.
