EWING, N.J. – The College of New Jersey women's basketball team defeated Hunter College on Friday night by a final score of 73-49. The Lions improved to 3-2 on the season, while the Hawks dropped to 1-3.
The Lions came out of the gate fast, and raced out to an 11-4 lead.
Rachel Gazzola made a three-pointer for the first bucket of the game.
Shannon Devitt made a couple of free throws, then
Jen Byrne knocked down a trifecta. Devitt hit a lay-up and was fouled, then sank the free throw to put the Lions ahead by seven.
TCNJ took a 17-9 lead at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Lions built a 26-12 advantage with a run that was capped off by another bucket from Devitt. The Hawks were able to cut into the TCNJ lead, and the Lions were up 30-21 at the half.
The Lions began the second half strong, and started the third quarter with a 14-2 run. Devitt began to take over the game, as she scored eight points during the run.
Another three-pointer from Gazzola made the Lion lead 42-23 with 6:11 to go in the third. Devitt hit from in close to make it a 21 point TCNJ lead with 5:37 to play in the third. TCNJ was able to control the rest of the game to seal the 24 point win.
Devitt had a monster game with 24 points and 23 rebounds. The 23 rebounds set a new career-high, and is the second-highest in a single game in TCNJ history. Gazzola tallied 17 points and five rebounds, while Byrne scored 15 points with five rebounds.
TCNJ will return to action for the NJAC opener against Stockton on Nov. 26.
