NEWARK, N.J. – The College of New Jersey women's basketball team cruised past Rutgers-Newark on Saturday, 58-41. The Lions improved to 5-3 and 2-1 in New Jersey Athletic Conference action, while the Scarlet Raiders fell to 1-6 and 0-3 in the conference.
The Lions grabbed control of the game early, and raced out to a 20-7 lead in the opening quarter.
Morgan Heller sank a jumper off of a
Sydney Blum assist to make it an 11-4 Lion lead.
Jen Byrne knocked down a three-pointer off of a
Shannon Devitt assist on the next possession, then Devitt netted the next six TCNJ points to give the Lions a 13 point advantage.
TCNJ was able to hold the lead in the second quarter, and a Devitt lay-up right before the half ended put the Lions ahead 32-17. The Lions continued to dictate the place of the game, and gained a sizable lead with a 15-4 run in the third quarter. Devitt hit a jumper on the first possession of the half, then Heller knocked down a three-pointer to put TCNJ ahead 39-22. Jumpers from Byrne and Blum put the Lions ahead 45-22. TCNJ did not look back in the fourth quarter to coast to the NJAC win.
Devitt led the way with 22 points and 15 rebounds. Byrne scored 16 points and grabbed six rebounds, while Heller tallied nine points and added four rebounds.
The Lions return to action Dec. 14 when they will travel to Montclair State.
