Women's Tennis Tops No. 24 Christopher Newport

EWING, N.J. – The College of New Jersey women's tennis team earned its biggest win of the season Saturday afternoon. The Lions (9-0) knocked off 24th-ranked Christopher Newport University (1-2) 5-4. All six individuals to compete for TCNJ picked up wins individually.

Julia Yoon was the hero for the Lions. In her first collegiate singles match, Yoon delivered a 6-2, 7-5 win that clinched the dual.

TCNJ jumped out to a 2-1 lead in doubles play. Liya Davidov teamed with her fourth different partner of the season, pairing with Alyssa Baldi for an 8-5 victory at number one. At number three, Sarah Phung teamed with Navya Yemula for an 8-4 win.

In singles play, Audrey Chen won at number four in three sets with the Captains taking a victories at two and three to even the match.

Liya Davidov traded 7-5 sets with 20th-ranked individual Johanna Ranta-aho. In the third, Ranta-aho earned the captains a victory with a hard-fought 6-4 set. Nearly simultaneously, Yemula finished her straight set victory setting up the deciding match at number six.

Yoon cruised to a first set victory and appeared to be well on her way to a quick victory breaking early in the second set to take a 2-0 second set lead. Her opponent would not go quietly, immediately breaking back before holding serve to tie the set. The pair would be even at 3-3, 4-4, and 5-5 with Yoon again holding serve to take a 6-5 lead into the final crossover. Yoon continued to return everything that her hard-hitting opponent threw at her and earned the break to deliver the team victory to the Lions.

The Lions return to action Saturday, Mar. 2, when they host Dickinson College at Hopewell Tennis Center.
