Men's Soccer Downs Gettysburg

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The College of New Jersey men's soccer team defeated Gettysburg College on Saturday afternoon by a final score of 2-1. The win marked the second in as many days for TCNJ, as it defeated Lycoming College 2-1 in overtime yesterday in the first day of the Turk Emekli Classic.

Gettysburg struck first just six minutes into the match, as Sam Lerman scored to put the Bullets out in front 1-0. The Bullets kept the pressure on the Lion defense, yet TCNJ keeper Daniel Mecadon came up with six saves in the first half to keep the lead at one.

The Lions found the equalizer in the 36th minute. Michael Maltese sent in a beautiful cross that found Justin Dominique. Dominique punched in the header to notch things up at 1-1. The goal marked the second in as many days for Dominique, as he scored his first collegiate goal yesterday to tie up the match with 44 seconds to play in regulation.

Just over seven minutes into the second half, TCNJ grabbed the lead. James Pike scored on a free kick from about 20 yards out. He sent in a strong ball that snuck inside of the left post to put the Lions out in front.

The remainder of the game was controlled by the Lions as they held on for the victory. The TCNJ defensive unit only allowed four shots in the second half, and Mecadon came up with three saves to keep the Lions on top. The junior keeper played a key role in the victory, as he registered nine total saves on the afternoon.

Next up for TCNJ is the home opener against Brooklyn College on Wednesday, Sept. 4 at 6:30 p.m.
