EWING, N.J. – The College of New Jersey men's soccer team defeated Drew University on Wednesday night by a final score of 2-1. TCNJ improved its record to 7-1 on the season, while Drew slipped to 3-4 on the year.
The Lions struck first just 19 minutes into the match. After a throw in,
Sam Monaco sent in a header in a crowded box.
Matthew Nastarowicz got a lefty tap on the ball and re-directed it into the back of the net to make it a 1-0 lead. The goal was the second of the year for Nastarowicz.
TCNJ scored again only ten minutes later.
Justin Dominique made a strong run up the right side, and from five yards out on the right he centered it to
Kevin Esteves. The Drew keeper was out of position as he was playing Dominique, and Esteves punched it in to make it a 2-0 advantage. That marked the third straight game that Esteves has scored in.
The Lions controlled the tempo in the first half, as they out-shot the Rangers 8-3 in the opening period.
Drew did not let TCNJ go easily into the night, and scored in the 68
th minute. Modesto Nogueira scored from 25 yards out to pull within 2-1, yet that is all the Lions would allow.
In the final seconds, the Drew keeper booted the ball into a crowed TCNJ box for a last chance effort. Monaco rose up above everybody else and headed the ball away to seal the victory.Â
Daniel Mecadon picked up the win in net, and tallied a pair of saves on the night.
TCNJ will return to the pitch on Saturday, Sept 21 for the New Jersey Athletic Conference opener at Rutgers-Newark.
