EWING, N.J. – The TCNJ women's basketball team picked up a win over Rutgers-Camden on Saturday, 66-53. The Lions improved to 7-5 including 4-1 in conference play, while the Scarlet Raptors fell to 5-5 and 0-5 in the NJAC.
TCNJ held a slim 26-25 lead at the half. With two minutes to play in the second quarter,
Shannon Devitt knocked down a jump shot to pull TCNJ within 25-24.
Jen Byrne made a jumper with 10 seconds left to give the Lions the lead heading into halftime.
The Lions grabbed a 10 point lead by way of a 9-0 run in the third quarter. Devitt hit a bucket to put TCNJ up 36-31, then on the next Lion possession
Rachel Gazzola struck from three-point range to extend the advantage to eight. Devitt continued to attack the Scarlet Raptor defense, and recorded another bucket to put the Lions up 41-31.
Rutgers-Camden dwindled the lead to four at the end of the third, yet TCNJ extended it back to nine quickly in the fourth.
Elle Cimilluca knocked down a three-pointer, then Devitt scored from in close yet again. Gazzola would give the Lions a 14 point lead with a three-pointer. The Lions were able to control the rest of the game and grab the victory.
Devitt had a monster game with 27 points on 11-of-20 shooting from the field, and she added seven rebounds. She also blocked three shots and grabbed four steals.
Gazzola added 18 points, while Byrne chipped in 11.
Morgan Heller pulled down nine rebounds.
The Lions return to the court on Wednesday, when they will travel to New Jersey City University for a 6:00 p.m. tip off.
