EWING, N.J. – The College of New Jersey women's basketball team was topped by Montclair State on Saturday by a final score of 52-38. The Lions fell to 13-7 on the year including 10-3 in NJAC play. The Red Hawks improved to 16-4 and 11-2 in the NJAC.
Shannon Devitt passed the 1,000 point mark for her career in the second quarter. Devitt has been a standout for the Lions the last three seasons. Coming into today's game, she was averaging a double-double on her career with a mark of 13.4 points and 11 rebounds per game. Devitt was a D3hoops.com Second Team All-Region honoree last year. She was also named NJAC Defensive Player of the Year a season ago. Devitt is the second Lion to eclipse the thousand point threshold this season, as
Jen Byrne achieved her 1,000th in November.
Devitt scored her 1,000
th point with 2:55 to go in the second quarter to cut the Montclair lead to 23-15. The Red Hawks took a 25-15 advantage into halftime.
In the third quarter Montclair State went up 31-18, but a 6-0 stretch from TCNJ cut the lead to 31-24.
Rachel Gazzola converted on an and-one to make it a 10 point game. Gazzola would get fouled after another lay-up, and she hit that free throw to pull the Lions within 31-24. The Red Hawks made a three-pointer at the end of the third quarter to take a 35-24 lead.
A pair of free throws from Gazzola cut the deficit to 38-29 in the fourth. TCNJ hung around, but the Red Hawks did not let the Lions pull within arm's reach to grab the win.
Gazzola led TCNJ with 15 points. Devitt scored 14 points and grabbed five rebounds.
Elle Cimilluca tallied six points and five assists, while Byrne grabbed seven rebounds.
The Lions will return to the court on Feb. 5 for a road trip to Rutgers-Camden.
