Women’s Basketball Falls to Rowan in NJAC Semifinals

GLASSBORO, N.J. – In the New Jersey Athletic Conference Semifinals, the fourth-seeded TCNJ women's basketball team was defeated by top-seeded Rowan, 82-62, on Tuesday night.

Jen Byrne scored 10 points to move into fifth place all-time in TCNJ history in scoring. She finished her career with 1,290 points. For her efforts, she was named to All-NJAC honors in each of the last three seasons. Byrne also earned D3hoops.com All-Region honors her sophomore season.

The Lions (16-11) jumped out to a 17-7 lead in the first quarter. Morgan Heller knocked down a three-pointer to put TCNJ ahead, 6-1. A few possessions later, Sydney Blum hit from three-point range to push the lead to 15-5. Byrne scored a lay-up to give the Lions a 10-point advantage with 1:54 left in the first quarter.

Rowan (23-3) battled back with a big run to take a 42-27 lead heading into halftime. The Profs caught fire from three-point range. Rowan knocked down 13 three-pointers on 39.4% shooting for the game.

The Lions pulled to within 12 points early in the third quarter when Elle Cimilluca hit a three-pointer. Rowan recorded the next four points, then Blum converted a lay-up. A couple of possessions later, Blum found Shannon Devitt on the fast break who scored from in close to pull TCNJ within 48-35.

With 3:17 to go in the third, Cimilluca made a three-pointer that trimmed the deficit to 52-38. Rowan continued to shoot well and hit a three-pointer on the next possession. Jane Beiermeister's lay-up pulled the Lions within 55-40, but the Profs closed the third quarter on a 7-0 run.

Devitt nearly recorded a triple-double. She scored a game-high 25 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, and blocked a career-high nine shots. Beiermeister scored a career-high nine points off the bench and added nine boards. Cimilluca scored six points, dished out five assists, and grabbed five rebounds.

Despite the setback, the Lions still had a successful season. This marked TCNJ's third consecutive trip to the NJAC Semifinals. The Lions had three student-athletes named to All-NJAC teams in Devitt, Byrne, and Rachel Gazzola.
