EWING, N.J. – The No. 40 TCNJ men's tennis team swept doubles play on its way to a 5-4 victory over Haverford on Friday. The win moves the Lions to 2-1 on the season, while the Fords fall to 0-1 on the year.
Thomas Wright and
Gokul Murugesan combined for an 8-4 win at number two to start the day.
Matthew Michibata and
Justin Wain followed with an 8-5 victory at number one.
Nick Matkiwsky and
Akul Telluri finished the sweep with an 8-6 win at number three.
The Fords controlled singles play early getting wins at numbers one and three. Wain and Matkiwsky each dropped their first set, but bounced back to win the second at numbers two and four. Matkiwsky ultimately fell in the third set, but Wain fought through to earn the three-set victory, giving TCNJ a 4-3 lead in the match.
Nikola Kilibarda was dominant at sixth singles to clinch the match for the Lions, winning 6-0, 6-2. Telluri battled back after falling in the first set to force a third before ultimately falling in a superbreaker.
The Lions return to the courts Saturday when they host Dickinson at 4 p.m.
