EWING, N.J. – The No. 1 TCNJ women's soccer team capped an unbeaten regular season in fine fashion, sending its eight seniors and legendary coaching duo out with a 5-0 NJAC rout of visiting Stockton on Wednesday night.
Emma Pascarella had two goals and an assist and
Julia Obst scored in her final regular-season home game for the Lions (15-0-1, 9-0), who will host an NJAC semifinal next Tuesday. That could very well be a rematch with the Ospreys, who finished in fourth place and will host the fifth seed in a quarterfinal matchup this weekend.
Following a touching video tribute to seniors
Gabriella Barquin,
Nikki Butler,
Amelia Curtis,
Deanna D'Imperio,
Jess Hall, Obst,
Alexandra Panasuk, and
Alexandra Ryan – and another for longtime head coach
Joe Russo and assistant coach
Bob Turner, who are retiring at the conclusion of the season – the Lions exploded in a trademark surge just past the midway point of the first half.
Held down for the first 25 minutes and change, Obst put TCNJ on top with a hard volley off a cross from Pascarella. Less than three minutes later, Pascarella's attempted cross nestled into the back of the net from a difficult angle to double the home side's advantage.
TCNJ put an exclamation point on the half when
Allie O'Keefe sent a long ball over the head of the Stockton back line to her sister
Lindsay O'Keefe, who calmly measured her shot on a one-on-one with the keeper and sent a shot into the lower left side of the netting with 3.5 seconds on the clock.
Pascarella completed her brace in the 58
th minute, finishing off a terrific cross by
Sophie Vieira, and
Ivonne Vazquez capped the scoring with a rocket of a shot at the 4:01 mark of the second stanza.
All eight seniors saw the field for the Lions, including Ryan, who suffered a season-ending injury earlier in the season but was on the field to start the contest. After the first touch, TCNJ booted the ball out of bounds to send Ryan back to the sideline in an emotional moment.
Pascarella put three of her team-high four shots on target.
Gianna Coppola,
Amelia Curtis,
Ava Garay, and Vazquez each recorded two shots.
Panasuk finished with two saves before giving way to
Corinne Byrum with about 15 minutes to play.
With its first unbeaten regular season since 2017 in the books, TCNJ has the weekend off before returning to Lions Stadium for an NJAC semifinal on Wednesday.
