ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The TCNJ women's basketball team lost in its season opener to Southern Virginia, 60-56, on Friday afternoon at the Rochester Tipoff Tournament. Julia Setaro led the Lions with 17 points.
TCNJ used a dominant run in the first quarter to take an early lead. After falling behind, 8-3, TCNJ outscored the Knights, 20-3, over the final 5:43 of the first period to lead, 23-11, at the end of the quarter.
Isabella Cafaro hit three pointers on back-to-back possessions for the Lions early in the run, pushing TCNJ to a 13-8 lead. She finished with 14 points and six rebounds. Emily Toy nailed a three at the buzzer to finish off the run.
After the lead stayed in that general range through the middle two quarters, the Lions carried a 12-point advantage into the fourth, 51-39. TCNJ, though, went cold from the field. The Lions shot just 1-for-12 in the final quarter, with Setaro's layup with 46 seconds left representing the team's only make.
That cut the SVU lead to 58-56, but the Knights made a layup late to push the advantage to two possessions, rounding out the scoring.
Toy was the third TCNJ player to reach double figures, finishing with 10 points. Izzy Leazier finished with seven points and eight rebounds. Nina Branchizio had five steals.
The Lions will play New Paltz in the tournament's consolation game Saturday at 3 p.m.
