Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Andy Edwards

Women's Basketball Roars Past Rutgers-Camden

CAMDEN, N.J. – Nina Branchizio made all of her shots – including five from beyond the arc – to fire the TCNJ women's basketball team to its fourth straight victory, 73-49 at Rutgers-Camden on Wednesday night.

The rookie went 6-for-6 from the floor and ripped off a season-high 17 points in only 16 minutes of play for the Lions (4-3, 2-0), who remained unbeaten in NJAC play. Izzy Leazier added a career-high 11 points and Arianna McCleod chipped in 10 in her first career start to help power TCNJ to its ninth consecutive victory in the series.

The Lions wasted no time jumping out to a sizeable lead, scoring the game's first six points after Branchizio buried a 3-pointer on the game's first possession. The margin swelled to double-digits (16-6) on a free throw by Leazier, and Morgan Heller's foul-line jumper on a feed from Nikki Alexatos beat the buzzer to give TCNJ a 20-6 advantage after one period.

The Lions led by as many as 18 points in the second quarter, when McCleod knocked down a 3-pointer after a kick-out by Heller to make it 26-8 about two minutes into the stanza. The scoring pace slowed considerably for the remainder of the half, which came to an end with TCNJ up 31-16.

The Scarlet-Raptors were an efficient 5-for-9 from the field in the first half, but the Lions' swarming defense forced a turnover on nearly half of the team's 30 possessions in the opening 30 minutes. TCNJ held Rutgers-Camden scoreless for the last four minutes of the first quarter and put up 14 attempts from long range in the opening half, sinking five of them.

Rutgers-Camden's turnover woes continued into the second half, and Branchizio and company made the hosts pay. TCNJ was a sizzling 10-for-15 in the third quarter, including a 5-for-8 mark from 3-point range.

Branchizio went wild in the early part of the second half, embarking on a personal run of 11 consecutive Lions points that included 3-pointers on three of five trips down the floor. Her fifth and final trey of the night was part of a 16-2 run that ended with a steal and layup by Julia Setaro, giving TCNJ a 50-22 lead midway through the period.

Leazier was 3-for-4 from the field and the foul line for the Lions, who made 11 3-pointers to just two for the Scarlet Raptors.

McCleod added six rebounds, four steals, and three assists to her stat line, while Heller produced seven points. Isabella Cafaro, Jezlyn Cross, Jordan Herwood, and Emily Toy had five points each, and Alexatos coupled four points with four steals.

TCNJ returns to Packer Hall to entertain Montclair State in a Saturday NJAC showdown.
