Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Evan Shomo

Women’s Basketball Ties Program’s Best Season Start Since 1998-99 With Victory Over Kean

EWING, N.J. – The winning streak reached six games for the TCNJ women's basketball team on Saturday. The Lions defeated Kean by a final score of 70-47, and the 6-0 start to the season matches the program's best since the 1998-99 campaign.

The momentum shifted to TCNJ in the second half, as a huge 26-10 third quarter gave the Lions control of the game. Kean hit a bucket to pull within 31-25 right out of halftime, but the Lions raced out to the big lead with a 22-6 run.

The duo of Shannon Devitt and Julia Setaro scored 17 of the Lions' 22 points in that run. Devitt scored a jumper off of a Setaro assist to give TCNJ a 41-25 lead with under six minutes to play in the third. A few minutes later, Devitt converted on an old-fashioned three-point play to stretch the lead to 48-28.

After Setaro knocked down another jumper, Emily Toy sank a trifecta that put the Lions' lead to 53-31. Two free throws each from Toy and Elle Cimilluca stretched the advantage to 57-33 by the end of the third quarter.

TCNJ built momentum towards the end of the second quarter with an 11-2 run. Izzy Leazier capped off the stretch with an old-fashioned three-point play to put the Lions ahead, 27-17, with 1:50 left in the half. Cimilluca recorded a bucket in the paint right as the first half expired to give the Lions a 31-23 lead.

Devitt posted her 46th career double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds. The senior forward also registered four steals on the defensive end.

Setaro scored 16 points, while Cimilluca totaled 11 points and four assists. Sydney Blum scored eight points and grabbed five rebounds, and Toy recorded seven points in seven minutes played.

TCNJ shot an impressive 22-of-26 (88.5%) from the free throw line. The Lions defense held the Cougars to 16-of-58 shooting (27.6%) from the field and 6-of-24 (25%) from three-point range.

The Lions will return to action against William Paterson next weekend. Game one on Feb. 26 will be at the Pioneers.
