EWING, N.J. – In the NJAC Semifinals, The College of New Jersey women's basketball team was defeated by New Jersey City, 73-63. The Lions close out the 2021 season with a 9-1 record.
In the second quarter,
Shannon Devitt broke the TCNJ all-time career rebounding record. Devitt grabbed 12 boards today to finish her career with 971 rebounds. She broke Candy Kaschack's program record of 962 boards, which was a mark that stood since 1984.
The semifinal game was a tightly-contested, back-and-forth battle that featured six ties and 10 lead changes. The Gothic Knights held a 53-49 lead at the end of the third quarter, but the Lions got in front with an 8-0 run.
Morgan Heller recorded the first bucket with a lay-up, then Devitt scored from in close to tie the game.
After a Devitt block on the defensive end,
Carson Fontana drained a corner three-pointer to put TCNJ up, 56-53.
Elle Cimilluca hit a free throw to make it a four-point game.
The seesaw battle continued, and New Jersey City tallied the next nine points to grab a 62-57 lead, yet the Lions refused to let the Gothic Knights build a big lead. Two free throws from Devitt and a lay-up from
Sydney Blum made it a one-point game with 2:55 to play.
The big shot came from Dayjah Anderson of NJCU, who's jumper with 1:00 to go put the Gothic Knights ahead, 67-63. The Gothic Knights stopped the Lions on the other end and were able to make their free throws to secure the win.
Devitt recorded her 50
th career double-double with a game-high 25 points and 12 rebounds. She finishes her career with 1,282 points, which is tied for sixth in TCNJ history. She also finishes with 207 blocks, which is second in program history.
Blum scored 11 points and added four rebounds. In the first half, she knocked down three consecutive three-pointers. Blum finishes her sophomore season averaging 8.2 points per game.
Cimilluca finishes her career with 251 assists, which is 12
th in TCNJ history. She started in all 55 games that she played in at point guard since joining the Lions prior to her sophomore season. Coming into today's game, Cimilluca led the NJAC in assists with an average of six dimes per game.
TCNJ's 9-0 start to the 2021 season is the best for the program since the 1998-99 campaign.
