NEWARK, N.J. – The 19
th-ranked TCNJ softball team continued its winning ways on Tuesday. The Lions swept Rutgers-Newark by final scores of 7-3 and 8-0. TCNJ improved to 15-3 including 14-2 in NJAC action on the season. The Lions are poised in second place in the conference standings one game behind Rowan.
Game One
TCNJ scored a quick run in the first inning by way of an RBI sacrifice fly off the bat of
Allie Immerso. In the third inning, the Lions seized control of the game by putting up a five-spot.
Back-to-back singles from
Kaci Neveling and
Katie Winchock started the rally. An RBI triple off the bat of Immerso drove them home. After today's games, Immerso leads the Lions in RBIs with 16 on the season.
Lauren Conroy knocked her in with a base hit to extend the lead to 4-0. The last run of the inning came when
Elyse Nardozza reached base on an error which scored Conroy.
Eliza Sweet earned the win in the circle for the Lions. Sweet went 3.2 innings and allowed only one run.
Ally Schlee threw the final 3.1 innings and struck out four batters. Sweet improved to 5-2 this season with the victory.
Neveling, Immerso, Winchock, and Conroy picked up two hits apiece.
Jaclyn Carifi went 3-4 in game one.
Kayla Hillenbrand pushed over the seventh run of the game with an RBI sacrifice fly in the seventh inning.
Game Two
Starting pitcher
Alanna Namit had a big game on both sides of the ball. In the circle, Namit delivered the complete-game shutout. The complete game is the 33
rd of her career and the shutout marks the 19
th of her career.
Namit also had herself a day at the plate. She went 2-4 with three RBIs, a home run, and a double. The homer, her second of her career, was a two-run shot in the seventh inning to put TCNJ ahead, 8-0.
TCNJ pushed across two runs in the second inning via a two-RBI single from
Julia Kinnally. In the third, Immerso scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of
Julia Mayernik, then a Namit double stretched the lead to 4-0.
Immerso and Hillenbrand each picked up an RBI to push the lead to 6-0. The offense proved to be more than enough for Namit, who struck out 12 batters while allowing only three hits to improve to 6-1 on the season.
Immerso, Namit, Hillenbrand, and Kinnally all tallied two hits in the backend of the doubleheader. Immerso was also active on the base paths, racking up three steals.
The Lions will close out the regular season against William Paterson at home on May 1. That will also be the Lions' Senior Day.
