VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.– In the second game of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament, the No. 10 TCNJ softball team topped No. 6 Moravian by a final score of 6-1.
TCNJ advances to play No. 3 and host Virginia Wesleyan later this afternoon. The Lions have now won 14 consecutive games dating back to April 20. The Lions and Marlins are the only two unbeaten teams remaining in the double-elimination regional.
Moravian struck first with a run in the top of the first inning, but TCNJ answered right away with two in the bottom frame. With two runners on,
Lauren Conroy ripped an RBI single to right field. The next batter was
Elyse Nardozza, who executed a perfect safety squeeze that scored
Katie Winchock.
The Lions pushed over two more in the second inning when
Allie Immerso ripped a triple to deep right center field. The hit marked the 100
th for Immerso in her career. She owned a .361 career batting average heading into today's game. In the third, the Lions extended the lead to 5-1 when
Julia Kinnally scored on an error.
The six runs proved to be more than enough for TCNJ starter
Alanna Namit. Namit threw a complete game and did not allow another run after the first inning. She struck out six to improve to 11-1 this season.
Winchock went 2-3,
Kaci Neveling went 2-4, and Kinnally was 2-4 to pace the TCNJ bats. Nardozza and Immerso both recorded two RBIs.
The Lions and the Marlins will battle this afternoon for the right to advance into Sunday undefeated.
