Wrestling Routs RIT on 3-0 Day at John Reese Duals

1/23/2022 9:11:00 PM

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The No. 17 TCNJ wrestling team routed ninth-ranked RIT as part of an unbeaten afternoon at Wilkes' John Reese Duals on Sunday.
The Lions rolled up a 31-6 victory on the Tigers before posting back-to-back shutouts of Oneonta (50-0) and West Virginia Tech (54-0) to run their dual record to a perfect 6-0 on the year. TCNJ won all but two of 24 contested bouts on the day.

No. 17 TCNJ 31, No. 9 RIT 6
Nick Denora picked up an impressive result to open the day, notching an overtime takedown to clinch a 3-1 victory over Lee Rubin at 125.

Denora's walk-off was the catalyst for a run of five straight bout victories for the Lions. Kyle Nase grabbed a 5-1 decision over Josh Post at 133, and Domenic Difrancescantonio utilized a four-point near fall to overturn a second-period deficit and snatch a 7-4 victory opposite Chris Horton at 141.

Mike Conklin had a first-period takedown and a second-period reversal en route to a 5-1 triumph against Mike Glynn at 149 before Matt Sacco piled up five takedowns and six near-fall points during an 18-2 technical fall at 157.

Austin Lamb got the Tigers on the board with an 8-2 decision at 165, and Zach Stedeford managed to stay on top the entire third period to clinch a 3-2 victory over Reid Colella on riding time at 174.

Daniel Surich put a forceful stop to RIT's mini-run, registering three four-point near falls and sealing a 16-0 technical fall with an escape three seconds into the third period. It was the fourth tech fall of the season for Surich, who leads the team in that category.

Quinn Haddad went down to the wire with Josh Harkless at 197, eventually using a third-period takedown to break a deadlock and see out a 4-2 win. Thomas Marretta won by forfeit at heavyweight.

No. 17 TCNJ 50, Oneonta 0
The Lions had little trouble with Oneonta in their second dual of the day, tallying bonus points – and three falls – in the first five bouts.

Ryan Rosenthal got the call at 125 and had 10 near-fall points on the way to a 17-1 technical fall. Kyle Nase then shut out his 133-pound foe, 8-0, to precede a string of three consecutive TCNJ falls.

Difrancescantonio started off the pin parade with a scintillating show at 141. He went down 8-1 to Oneonta's Michael Blando, but a takedown led to a fall with a minute remaining in the first in a stunning turnaround.

Conklin pinned his opponent with 16 seconds remaining in the first period at 149, and Matt Sacco turned the initial takedown of his 157-pound bout into a fall inside of the first minute.

Matt Surich gutted out a 3-2 win at 165, and Reid Colella cruised to a 21-5 technical fall at 174.

Daniel Surich put up ten points, eight of them by near-fall, before pinning his 184-pound adversary in a mere 1:25. Haddad followed with a pin in 2:30.

Marretta completed the first of two shutouts for the Lions with a 2-1 win on riding-time advantage at heavyweight.

No. 17 TCNJ 54, West Virginia Tech 0
There were only four contested bouts in the Lions' final appearance of the day, and all went their way. Nase pulled out a tough 10-8 decision at 133.

Matt Sacco needed only 56 seconds to pin his 156-pound opponent, and Daniel Surich grabbed his second pin of the day midway through the first period at 184.
Colella was a 7-3 winner at 174.
