Men's Soccer Seniors Lead the Way Past NJCU

EWING, N.J.- The TCNJ men's soccer team celebrated Senior Day on Saturday night in a 2-1 win over NJCU.

Gavin Grecsek's first career goal, assisted by fellow senior Justin Dominique, got the scoring started and helped send the Lions out winners in front of their home crowd. Grecsek and Dominique were honored at halftime alongside Alex Quezada and Joseph Schlageter.

Coming into Saturday's contest, the Gothic Knights had outscored opponents 28-8 and had allowed only two teams to score more than one goal all season. It took TCNJ less than a half to become the third.

The Lions got the scoring going 17 minutes in when J.J. Zaun had a solid clear out of the defensive zone to midfield. Dominique was able to reel in the clear and take off towards the net. With his defender in his back pocket, Dominique sent a low running cross from right to left. Grecsek came in from the left side to send a missile into the top left corner of the net.

The goal for Grecsek was the first of his career as a Lion, a picture-perfect moment for the senior in his final home game.

Following the goal, his celebration that included taking his shirt off was enough to warrant a yellow card. Needless to say, the moment of the celebration outweighed the penalty.

TCNJ extended its lead to two in the 40th minute on a Bobby Hunter goal, assisted by David Anderson. The play became possible due to a Julien Carraha entry pass into the offensive zone which Anderson was able to pass to Hunter off the side of his foot. Hunter hit the one-timer into the bottom left corner of the net.

In the 65th minute, NJCU cut the lead in half on a headed pass to the top of the box and a left-footed shot that found its way to the back of the net.

NJCU tried to find the equalizer, but the Lions defense led by Walker Smith remained strong and held on for the 2-1 victory. Smith posted a solid outing with five saves, all of them coming in the first half.

The men's soccer team will play its last game of the 2022 season this Wednesday as the Lions travel to Rutgers-Camden with first touch at 7:00 PM.
