Women's Basketball Cruises Past Camden in NJAC Opener

CAMDEN, N.J. – A hot-shooting second quarter paved the way for a dominant road victory as the TCNJ women's basketball team cruised past Rutgers-Camden, 68-44, in Tuesday night's NJAC opener.

The Lions (4-2, 1-0) were 10-for-14 from the floor in the second stanza, expanding an already double-digit lead into insurmountable territory in claiming a second straight road win to end a three-game swing away from Packer Hall. Julia Setaro (15 points), Nina Branchizio (11), and Sydney Blum (10) combined to make 18 of their 23 field-goal attempts for TCNJ, which saw 12 players get on the scoresheet.

TCNJ led wire to wire and started to separate early, going ahead 17-4 in the final minute of the first quarter on the strength of a 10-0 run that featured baskets by five different players.

The Lions continued to pile on in the second frame, quickly doubling a nine-point lead in the span of a few minutes as Setaro kick-started an 11-2 burst with a lay-up. Branchizio drained a 3-pointer to make it 32-18 and, after a Scarlet Raptors basket, rookie Myah Hourigan-Hutton scored on a feed from Branchizio to ignite a stretch of six unanswered points. By the time Hourigan-Hutton returned the favor with an assist to Branchizio, it was 38-20 and TCNJ was rolling.

The Lions put the game away with the first six points of the third quarter, holding Camden off the board for more than six minutes in the process. Nikki Alexatos had a pair of field goals in the third, and first-year Katie Fricker made a 3-pointer. The margin grew as large as 26 on a lay-up by Isabella Cafaro in the closing stages before settling on the 24-point final spread.

In addition to shooting nearly 50 percent from the field (31-of-63), the Lions were exceptionally careful with the ball, committing only one turnover in the first half and seven for the game. TCNJ wound up with an 18-4 advantage in points off turnovers.

Alexatos (six) went 3-for-3 from the field, and Leazier was a healthy 3-for-5 on the way to a six-point night. Hourigan-Hutton each scored four points, Fricker and Morgan Heller tallied three apiece, and Cafaro joined Jordyn Herwood and Jezlyn Cross with two.

Leazier, Heller, and Kaitlyn Deiter each secured five rebounds to help TCNJ to a 41-28 surplus on the glass and 16 second-chance points. Deiter also handed out a team-high three assists. Blum finished with four rebounds and a pair of blocks.

The Lions return home to take on Rowan on November 30.
