SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO – The TCNJ women's basketball team is coming home from Puerto Rico with two victories in tow.
The Lions used an early barrage from long range to speed past Susquehanna for a 56-38 victory in their second and final contest of the Puerto Rico Clasico on Wednesday.
Julia Setaro and
Sydney Blum each scored 14 points to lead the charge.
The early tip – 9 AM local time – did nothing to faze Setaro and the Lions, who were ready from the whistle and led wire to wire. Setaro knocked down 3-pointers on each of the first two possessions for TCNJ, which scored the game's first seven points. The senior sharp-shooter went on to make two more triples – adding to one by Blum – before the end of the first quarter, after which the Lions were already out to a double-digit lead at 16-5.
Blum drained another triple on the first possession of the second stanza, part of an 8-2 run that culminated in a 24-7 advantage at the 6:59 mark. The River Hawks never got closer than eight the rest of the way.
Leading 46-38 with under four minutes to play in regulation after a brief Susquehanna surge, TCNJ went back in front by double digits on a bucket by
Emily Toy. The Lions went on to score the final 10 points of the contest, rendering the River Hawks scoreless for more than four minutes.
TCNJ dominated both ends of the game, scoring the game's first seven points as well as its last ten. The Lions outscored Susquehanna, 33-14, in the bookend quarters.
Setaro (4-for-6) and Blum (3-for-5) combined to make seven 3-pointers for TCNJ, which hit 10 of them on the morning while surrendering only three to Susquehanna. Blum was active in the interior, securing a team-high seven rebounds and blocking two shots.
Nina Branchizio finished with nine points on a trio of treys.
Izzy Leazier stuffed the stat sheet with four points, five rebounds, and six assists – all without committing a turnover.
TCNJ held Susquehanna to just 30.6 percent from the floor (15-of-49) and outrebounded the River Hawks by a 32-20 margin, including nine offensive boards. Blum had three of those offensive caroms, and
Katie Fricker chipped in a pair of her own.
The Lions return to NJAC play on January 4, when they host Stockton inside Packer Hall.
