EWING, N.J. – The TCNJ men's tennis team put down an early marker in the NJAC landscape Sunday, sweeping West Division counterpart Oneonta to remain unbeaten.
The Lions improved to 4-0 with relative ease, posting their first clean sweep of the year after claiming their first three dual matches by tight counts (6-3, 4-3, and 5-4), including a 5-4 walk-off against Vassar on Saturday.
This one was fairly straightforward, though the Red Dragons put up a fight in doubles competition and in one marathon singles match.
Matthew Michibata and
Justin Wain picked up an 8-5 victory at No. 1 doubles, fighting off two early breaks and a 3-0 lead for Oneonta's pairing of Riley Smith and Mason Spottek.
Meanwhile,
Nick Matkiwsky and
Nikola Kilibarda (No. 2) and
Derek Jordan and
Jacob Quijano (No. 3) prevailed by matching 8-4 score lines.
TCNJ made short work of the majority of singles play, as Wain (No. 1), Kilibarda (No. 3), Jordan (No. 5) and
Rahul Panoli (No. 6) all won by 6-1, 6-1 or 6-0, 6-1 routs.
Adrian Tsui remained perfect in singles on the season with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph at No. 2, leaving it to
Dorian Makarski to polish off the sweep. The rookie obliged in nail-biting fashion, outlasting Jacob Dornsife in a 7-6 (5), 5-7, 13-11 epic at fourth singles. Makarski saved a set point in the first set and match points in the third-set super breaker to seal the shutout.
The Lions return to action next Saturday, when they host Franklin & Marshall.
