EWING, N.J. – The No. 16 TCNJ wrestling team picked up another victory over a nationally ranked program as part of a sweep of Friday night's tri-meet inside the Rec Center.
The Lions (9-1) ousted No. 30 Alvernia by a resounding 28-6 count before routing Elizabethtown, 41-4. The victory over the Golden Wolves was TCNJ's third over a nationally ranked team this season and second in a row following a 25-16 win at Ithaca last Saturday.
Domenic Difrancescantonio had a major decision and technical fall, outscoring his two opponents by a combined 32-1 on the night.
Quinn Haddad and
Daniel Surich also posted technical falls for the Lions.
#16 TCNJ 28, Alvernia 6
Rosenthal conceded the first takedown at 125, but recovered to knot the bout with a pair of escapes and went ahead for good on a takedown midway through the second period. That was the last score of the match as the Lions' grappler posted a 4-2 victory.
Kyle Nase had four takedowns in a 9-2 win over Kyle Seibert at 133.
Difrancescantonio grabbed a major decision thanks to an early blitz and another in the closing seconds. He jumped out to a 7-0 lead inside the first 30 seconds of the second period with two takedowns and a pair of near-fall points, then tallied a takedown with two near-fall points just before the final buzzer of a 13-0 shutout at 141.
Mike Conklin had a reversal and a takedown in the third period to notch a 9-2 decision at 149.
Matt Sacco toughed out a 4-2 decision at 157, using a quick escape to start the third and holding on for the win with riding time attached.
Matt Surich put up a strong fight against the Golden Wolves' Matt Lackman, who is 31-1 and ranked 6
th in the country at 165. Surich allowed only one takedown, in the first period, in a 4-0 defeat.
Reid Colella secured a major decision at 174, tacking on two near-fall points to a takedown in the final seconds and using three minutes of riding time to extend the margin to 10-2.
Daniel Surich snagged a fairly comfortable 8-4 result at 184.
Haddad was dominant at 197, racking up a pair of four-point near falls and polishing off an 18-2 technical fall with his sixth takedown of the bout with Tonee Ellis.
Thomas Marretta battled Palmer Rodenhaber to the last second, but was unable to get the takedown he needed in a 3-2 setback at heavyweight.
#16 TCNJ 41, Elizabethtown 4
The nightcap was a parade of major decisions early on, with Rosenthal (12-4 at 125), Nase (13-5 at 133), and Conklin (11-3 at 149) all reaching the minimum eight-point requirement for bonus points via riding time and
Matt Sacco adding a 12-3 major at 157.
Difrancescantonio made quick work of his 141-pound opponent, registering three separate four-point near falls and sealing a 19-1 technical fall just 40 seconds into the second stanza.
Elizabethtown (7-6) got on the board with a major at 165, but Colella put the Lions right back on track with a 5-1 win at 174.
Daniel Surich matched Difrancescantonio with a technical fall at 184, cruising to a 20-4 rout before the Blue Jays forfeited the final two bouts of the night.
Matt Sacco (4:06) and
Daniel Surich (4:20) each piled up over four minutes of riding time, and Conklin was close at 3:53.
Of the 18 contested bouts on the night, Lions wrestlers owned over a minute of riding time after the first period in 11 of them, and held more than two minutes of riding time in the first period of six of them.
The Lions will take a contingent to the Messiah Open on Saturday.
