EWING, N.J. – The TCNJ men's tennis team pulled out a pair of tight doubles matches to pave the way for an 8-1 victory over visiting Washington College on Friday night inside the Rec Center.
Matthew Michibata and
Justin Wain were convincing winners at No. 1 doubles, downing Karl Hoegstedt and Andrew Smith by an 8-3 count.
Nick Matkiwsky and
Nikola Kilibarda secured an 8-6 triumph over Koby Bonta and Landon Strober with a late break on the No. 2 court before
Derek Jordan and
Jacob Quijano knocked off Ryohei Kawai and Brady Burns, 8-5, to complete the sweep.
Kilibarda quickly extended the lead to 4-0 with a 6-0, 6-0 double-bagel over Bonta at No. 4 singles.
Hoegstedt got the Shoremen on the board with a straight-set win at No. 1 singles, but Wain clinched the Lions' victory by handling Strober, 6-0, 6-3.
Matkiwsky (6-2, 6-2 over Burns) and Jordan (6-1, 6-0 over Aaradith Ravichandran) were resounding winners at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.
Despite starting much earlier than Kilibarda and Matkiwsky,
Adrian Tsui was nearly the last Lion off the court after going to a third-set super breaker at No. 3 singles. After claiming a first-set breaker against Kawai, Tsui dropped the second set, 6-1. He rebounded to eke past Kawai, 10-8, in the super breaker to keep his unbeaten singles mark intact.
