EWING, N.J. – Justin Wain put a bow on his Senior Day with a come-from-behind singles victory to clinch a 9-0 sweep of Ramapo for the No. 30 TCNJ men's tennis team in an NJAC dual on Friday at the Tennis Complex.
Wain, the lone graduating senior, was honored in a pre-match ceremony before the newly ranked Lions (11-1, 2-0) posted their second straight shutout and third in the last four duals. With the victory, TCNJ moved one step closer to an NJAC East Division title, with a win at NJCU on April 24 the only thing standing between the Lions and a date with the West Division champion for the NJAC title and inaugural automatic NCAA qualifying berth.
TCNJ won two of the three doubles matches via shutout and posted four double-bagels in singles play in another dominating performance.
Nikola Kilibarda and
Nick Matkiwsky opened with an 8-0 win over Bobby Ciarletta and Matthew Doran at No. 2 doubles, with
Derek Jordan and
Jacob Quijano hot on their heels with a matching 8-0 blanking at No. 3 against Alex Dehner and James Jackson.
Paired with
Akul Telluri on Friday, Wain was an 8-4 winner against Siddharth Byreddy and Kenny Elliott at No. 1.
Adrian Tsui (No. 2), Matkiwsky (No. 4), Jordan (No. 5), and Telluri (No. 6) all won by 6-0, 6-0 score lines, and Kilibarda turned in a dominant 6-0, 6-2 victory over Doran at No. 3.
That left it to Wain, who dropped the first set, 6-3, before storming back to take the second by a 6-1 count. He claimed the third-set super breaker, 10-2, to complete the sweep.
The Lions head to Salisbury to take on the regionally ranked Sea Gulls on Saturday.
