EWING, N.J. – The TCNJ women's basketball team got right back to its winning ways on Wednesday night, seizing control early in the second quarter and never relenting in a 74-47 NJAC victory over visiting Rutgers-Camden.
The Lions (12-5, 7-3) had their five-game winning run snapped at Ramapo three days prior, but showed no ill effects in extending their unbeaten streak over the Scarlet Raptors to a dozen.
The Lions put Camden (2-15, 0-10) in a bind from the tip, scoring on their first two possessions and jumping out to a quick 4-0 advantage.
Kaitlyn Deiter started the party with a lefty lay-in, and
Sydney Blum swooped in for an offensive rebound and a nifty reverse put-back.
Leading 11-8 late in the first,
Izzy Leazier's beautiful pocket pass to Deiter for an uncontested lay-in as the hosts finished the opening period on top, 13-10.
The Lions began to pull away early in the second, starting with seven consecutive points from
Nina Branchizio as the sophomore scored inside on a pinpoint pass from
Myah Hourigan-Hutton before burying a transition triple on a look-ahead pass from
Julia Setaro before making two of three free throws after being fouled from deep as the shot clock expired.
Katie Fricker banked in a tough shot in the paint and knocked down a free throw on back-to-back possessions to make it 23-14, and TCNJ went ahead by double figures for the first time at 27-16 on the rookie's driving lay-up with 4:22 left before half.
Setaro's long-range 3 from straight on capped a 7-0 run to end the first half, giving the Lions a 38-21 upper hand at the break.
The teams traded baskets to start the second half, until the Lions utilized another seven-point spree to begin separating. Leazier scored inside and polished off the run with an assist to
Jezlyn Cross for a layup, and TCNJ was off and running with a 49-27 lead at the 2:14 mark.
Cross netted three more field goals in the second half, including back-to-back buckets during a 9-0 run that
Isabella Cafaro bookended with a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws, respectively, to make it 70-40 with 4:14 to go.
Jalissa Pitts (25) and Rahzirah Blocker (20) combined for all but two of Rutgers-Camden's points on the night, and both narrowly missed a double-double with nine and eight boards, respectively.
Leazier finished with team highs in points (12) and rebounds (7) alongside three assists and a pair of steals in an all-around floor game. Setaro also landed on a dozen markers, and Branchizio collected 11.
Cross scored a career-high 10 points and needed only six shots to do it, connecting on all but one of them; she also pulled down four rebounds. Deiter had eight points and three assists, while Cafaro (seven points), Blum (six points, six rebounds) and Fricker (six points, four rebounds) turned in effective efforts.
The Lions held the Scarlet Raptors to 0-for-11 from beyond the arc and outrebounded the red-clad visitors by a 44-32 margin, leading to a 46-24 edge in the paint and 19-4 margin in second-chance points. TCNJ committed just six turnovers and piled up 13 assists, getting 25 points from its bench and scoring nine fast-break points.
The Lions continued league play with a home date against New Jersey City on Saturday, a rematch of last year's NJAC final.
