NEWARK, N.J. – It was a golden night at the Golden Dome for the TCNJ women's basketball team.
The Lions dominated Rutgers-Newark, 72-44, in Wednesday night's regular-season finale and got the assist they needed when William Paterson went on the road and took down Ramapo. As a result, TCNJ leapfrogged Ramapo for the No. 4 seed in the NJAC Tournament and will host the fifth-seeded Pioneers in Saturday's first round.
Julia Setaro hit four 3-pointers and scored 14 of her game-high 16 points in the first half for TCNJ (16-9, 11-7), which shot 52.6 percent in the first two periods (15-for-29). The Lions came out of the gates at a blistering pace, knocking down six 3-pointers in the first quarter alone – starting with Setaro's on the opening possession.
Nina Branchizio hit two of her own to match Setaro, with
Katie Fricker and
Izzy Leazier connecting on one apiece as the visitors more than doubled up the Scarlet Raiders, 27-13.
Setaro tacked on two more treys in the second stanza, and two free throws from the senior expanded the margin to 44-21 at the break.
Setaro opened the second-half scoring with an offensive rebound and a put-back, and TCNJ turned to
Kaitlyn Deiter for a bucket on four consecutive trips to extend its lead to 54-25 at the 6:32 mark of the third. The margin swelled to 30 (57-27) for the first time on a triple by Branchizio and grew as large as 35 points before settling on a 28-point finale.
Deiter was a tremendous interior complement to Setaro's long-range salvos, scoring 14 points on 7-of-9 from the field and snagging eight rebounds while blocking three shots on the defensive end.
Leazier finished with 11 points and six rebounds, and rookie
Katie Fricker notched her second double-figure tally in as many games with 10. Branchizio's trio of treys gave her nine points for the night.
Beth Grossman got in on the action with a season-high three points and
Mollie Brueggemeier netted her second basket in as many contests.
TCNJ made 11 3-pointers and outrebounded the Scarlet Raiders by a 48-29 count, leading to 16 second-chance points and 30 points in the paint.
The Lions begin their playoff journey on Saturday against William Paterson. They swept the Pioneers in the regular season, including a thrilling double-overtime victory in Packer Hall on Feb. 4.
